Winterburn & Eshton + Flasby

WINTERBURN, a joint township with Flasby, in the Parish of Gargrave, eastern division of the wapentake of STAINCLIFFE and EWCROSS, West riding of the county of YORK, 7 miles (N. W. by N.) from Skipton. The population is returned with Flasby. There is a place of worship for Independents. ESHTON, a township in the Parish of Gargrave, eastern division of the wapentake of STAINCLIFFE and EWCROSS, West riding of the county of YORK, 5.5 miles (N. W.) from Skipton, containing 69 inhabitants.

Samuel Lewis “Topographical Dictionary of England” 1831

The townships of Winterburn and Eshton are not part of the original Parish of Kirkby Malhamdale, they lie in the ecclesiastical parish of Gargrave. They are included here because of their geographical location and close links with Malhamdale.

Winterburn – previously: Winterburne, Witreburne

Eshton (the town of Ash trees) – previously: Esther, Asher, Essheton

Flasby – previously: Flaxby, Flasheby, Flattesby, Flatebi

Note that in the post conquest era these townships were in the fee of Clifford  (or Percy ?) as part of Gargrave which was of split ownership by the river Aire. Research of Gargrave records may be equally valuable to those of Malhamdale.
