Jefferys map – Malhamdale 1771

Thomas Jefferys map -1771

This is the first really detailed map to be produced showing the Malhamdale area and is a beautiful example of the engraver’s art. Produced at the scale of 1 inch to 1 mile, it was engraved on 20 copper plates, making up a map 8 feet wide by 10 feet high. Thomas Jefferys was a well known and influential London engraver and map publisher, though it is thought possible that Jefferys never set foot in Yorkshire, as the map was surveyed by Joseph Hodskinson, Thomas Donald and John Ainslie and published in the year Jefferys died.
