A Memorial of an award bearing date the twenty ninth day of January one thousand eight hundred and seventeen under the Hand and Seal of Thomas Buttle of Kirkby Lonsdale in the County of Westmorland Gentleman the Commissioner appointed by Virtue of certain Articles of Agreement Indented bearing date the sixth day of September one thousand eight hundred and thirteen for dividing and inclosing two certain undivided Pastures for the depasturing of Cattle commonly called and known by the name of Hanlith Cow Close and Hanlith Moor situate within the Township of Hanlith in the parish of Kirkby Mal hamdale in the County of York whereby in Execution and performance of the powers thereby delegated and given to him He doth set out assign and allot unto and amongst the several Owners and proprietors the following allotments of the several Pastures:

To William Brookes Leedes Searjeantson Esquire

All that Allotment or parcel of Land upon the said Pasture called Cow Close containing in Statute Measure fifty four Acres one rood and Thirty six perches (exclusive of a certain plot or parcel of Land set out for the purpose of getting Stone and Gravel)

Also all that Allotment or parcel of Land lying near the village of Hanlith aforesaid upon the said Pasture called Hanlith Moor containing in like Measure one acre and also all that other Plot piece or parcel of Ground lying near the said last mentioned Allotment on the South side of a certain Carriage Road containing in like Measure six perches

Also all that Allotment or parcel of Land on the south side of the said pasture called Hanlith Moor containing in like measure Forty one Acres and twelve Perches

And also all that other Allotment or parcel of Land on the North side of the said Pasture containing in like Measure Seventy two acres one Rood and twenty three Perches

To the Reverend William Roundale

All that Allotment or Parcel of Land on the said pasture called Cow Close containing two Acres three Roods and Ten perches

Also all that Allotment or parcel of Land on the same pasture containing in like Measure Forty eight Acres three Roods and twenty Five perches

Also all that plot or parcel of Ground lying near the Village of Hanlith upon the said pasture called Hanlith Moor containing Twenty nine Perches

And also all that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the said Pasture called Hanlith Moor containing Fifty four acres two Roods and Twenty eight perches

To Robert Hind

All that allotment or Parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Cow Close containing thirty four acres one rood and five perches

Also all that plot piece or parcel of Ground lying on the said pasture called Hanlith Moor near the Dwelling house of the said Robert Hind in the Village of Hanlith aforesaid containing twelve perches

Also all that other plot piece or parcel of Ground lying near the last mentioned Allotment on the opposite side of the Road containing one rood and twenty eight perches

And also all that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Hanlith Moor containing Twenty four Acres one Rood and thirty two perches

To Thomas Hutchinson

All that allotment or parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Cow Close containing Thirteen Acres one Rood and thirty seven perches

Also all that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Hanlith Moor containing Ten acres and thirty five perches

To James Constantine

All that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Cow Close containing five Acres one rood and twenty four perches

Also all that plot piece or parcel of Ground lying near the Village of Hanlith aforesaid upon the said pasture called Hanlith moor and adjoining the Homestead Of the said James Constantine containing seventeen perches

And Also all that allotment or parcel of Ground on the said pasture containing six acres one Rood and eight perches

To John Parker

All that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Cow Close containing four Acres three Roods and Seventeen perches

Also all that Allotment or Parcel of Ground on the said Pasture called Hanlith Moor containing four Acres one rood and twenty four perches

To John Litton

All that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Cow Close containing five Acres one Rood and Twenty eight perches

Also all that plot piece or parcel of Ground upon the said Pasture called Hanlith Moor adjoining the Homestead of the said John Litton in the Village of Hanlith aforesaid containing Five perches

Also all that other plot piece or parcel of Ground adjoining the said last mentioned Allotment containing one Rood and Twelve perches

And also all that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the same pasture containing two Acres one rood and thirty three perches

To the said William Rookes Leedes Serjeantson in Right of his purchase from the Reverend James Serjeantson

All that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Hanlith Moor containing thirty nine acres and one rood

To John Peart

All that plot piece or parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Hanlith Moor adjoining his Homestead near the Village of Hanlith aforesaid on the East side of certain private Carriage Road and Public Bridle and driving Road containing one Rood and Five perches

Also all that other Allotment or parcel of Ground near his said Homestead on the West side of the said Road containing three acres and fifteen perches

And also all that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the same Pasture containing twelve Acres one Rood and seventeen perches

To the Churchwarden and overseers of the poor of the said Township of Hanlith for the time being for the Benefit of the poor of the said Township

All that Allotment or parcel of Ground on the said pasture called Cow Close containing two Acres one Rood and one perch

The Execution of which said Award by the said Thomas Buttle is attested by William Hartley of Settle in the County of York Gentleman and Isabella Buttle of Kirkbylonsdale aforesaid Spinster

And the Execution thereof by him for the purposes of registering is attested by John Hartley of Settle aforesaid Gentleman and the said William Hartley and is hereby required to be registered by the said Thomas Buttle

The above map shows most of the land contained in the Hanlith Enclosure Award. The Enclosure Award Map isn’t lodged in the NYC Record Office and this information is a tentative reconstruction based on the Award text and field details contained in the much later 25 inch scale OS map (1909). Other parcels mentioned in the Award are quite probably contained in the area between Windy Pike Lane and Baregill Lane. The first parcel of James Constantines’s land probably lay just south of Windy Pike farmstead (OS field 78, 5.226 acres), more work still needs to be done or an original copy found.
