Airton
AIRTON, a township in that part of the parish of KIRKBY in MALHAM-DALE which is in the western division of the wapentake of STAINCLIFFE and EWCROSS,West riding of the county of YORK, 6.5 miles (S. E. by E.) from Settle, containing 187 inhabitants. In this township is a twist manufactory : there is also a free school, with a small endowment.

| Lancashire Textiles Project 2013:
With the closure of the Malhamdale cotton mills at the beginning of the 20th century, many workers moved to Lancashire where the industry continued into the latter part of the 20th Century. This site’s collection of 500 photographs and 190 transcribed interviews with individuals who worked in the industry, give some idea of what Airton Mill would be like just before its closure.
